Dani Proffitt, M.Ed., LPCC-S, MFT, Certified in EMDR, EMDR Consultant

Owner & Director of Pathways Family Counseling

I have a passion for helping individuals of all ages heal from emotional wounds and traumas that have negatively impacted the way they view themselves and the world around them. I strive to help you develop empathy and understanding for yourself by first understanding, “it is not what is wrong with you,” but how you learned how to survive and cope with the things that have happened to you.

I hold a Masters of Education in Marriage and Family Therapy/Counseling from The University of Akron. I am dual licensed as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with Supervisor Designation and Marriage and Family Therapist.

I provide individual, couples and family therapy and work with all ages across the lifespan.

I am a dedicated professional with a specialization in trauma and related disorders. My journey in this field has been marked by a profound commitment to learning and growth. I have obtained certifications in multiple  trauma treatment modalities. Notably, I am a certified in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and am also an EMDR Consultant. This role allows me to contribute to the advancement of trauma treatment practices that elevate the standard of care in the field of trauma therapy.

As a trauma-informed counselor, my approach to therapy is grounded in a holistic perspective. I recognize that healing and growth are interconnected with various aspects of your life and experiences.

Here's an overview of my approach:

  • Collaborative and Client-Centered:

    • Our therapeutic journey is a collaborative effort. Your input, preferences, and goals are central to our work together. You are the expert on your life, and I am here to support and guide you. This means creating a safe space where your autonomy and boundaries are prioritized.

  • Trauma-Informed:

    • Throughout our sessions, I approach your lived experiences with sensitivity and respect. I will guide you in insight development around the impact of past and present experiences on the view of self and others. I will further aid you in a more comprehensive understanding of the origins of your own defense mechanisms and patterns that may be negatively impacting your present life. I have extensive training in various trauma treatment modalities to support the unique needs of each individual client.

  • Systemic Perspective:

    • I consider the broader systems and relationships in your life, such as family dynamics, social networks, and cultural influences. Understanding these systems helps us uncover the roots of challenges and develop strategies for positive change.

  • Attachment-Based:

    • I recognize the significance of early attachment experiences in shaping your emotional well-being and relationships. Our work together may explore attachment patterns to promote healthier connections and self-understanding.

  • Developmentally Aware:

    • Your unique developmental journey is essential to our work. We'll consider how past experiences and developmental stages have influenced your present challenges and strengths.

  • Somatic Approach:

    • I acknowledge the profound connection between mind and body. We'll explore how your body stores and expresses stress or trauma, utilizing somatic techniques to promote healing and regulation.

  • Strengths-Based:

    • I believe in your resilience and capacity for growth. We'll focus on your strengths and resources, empowering you to navigate challenges and achieve your therapeutic goals.

  • Mindfulness and Self-Care:

    • I encourage mindfulness practices and self-care techniques to help you stay present, manage stress, and cultivate self-compassion.

By embracing this holistic approach, together, we'll work towards healing, personal growth, and a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationships to meet your goals.

As a supervisor, I am committed to nurturing the next generation of counselors, instilling in them the importance of trauma sensitivity, attachment awareness, and systemic understanding. I take pride in fostering an environment where growth and learning are paramount, allowing aspiring therapists to develop the skills and intuition necessary to make a lasting impact.

My journey has also led me to grow and run a counseling and mental health business. With a focus on trauma-informed care and holistic healing, we have continued to expand our areas of expertise with future plans to develop into a holistic wellness center to allow for a more comprehensive approach to healing.
